Two Hampton Roads-based Navy SEALs -- Chief Petty Officers Nathan H. Hardy and Michael E. Koch -- were killed by small arms fire in Iraq Monday while conducting combat operations, the Defense Department confirmed Tuesday. Both were 29."There are only approximately 2,500 SEALs in the Navy and they really are a brotherhood," said Navy Special Warfare spokesman Lt. David Luckett. "This is another unfortunate reminder of the risks and sacrifices these amazing warriors and their families make on a daily basis."Hardy, originally from New Hampshire, is survived by his wife, son, parents and brother. Koch, of Pennsylvania, leaves behind a fiancée, parents, brother and sister.
The families did not wish to comment Tuesday, a Navy spokesman said.Hardy enlisted in the Navy in 1997 and graduated from Basic Underwater Demolition / SEAL training in May 1998. He spent his entire Navy career with East Coast-based SEAL teams, according to a press release.Koch joined the Navy in the summer of 1998 and graduated from the rigorous SEAL training in 1999. Like Hardy, Koch spent his career with East Coast SEALs.
